Robert Wallis (PR)

Archaeology at
the University of Southampton UK, where he teaches
postgraduate and
undergraduate courses in the archaeology and
anthropology of art.
Doctoral
research (PhD gained February 2000, Southampton)
explored the interface
between so-called 'alternative' and professional
archaeologies,
particularly
the implications Neo-shamanism (Modern Western
shamanism) has for
archaeologists, anthropologists, indigenous
communities and heritage
managers in the UK and USA. Recent papers
have been published in
World
Archaeology, Journal of Contemporary
Religion, and Anthropology of
Consciousness. A volume of the PhD research is
under discussion with Routledge. Masters
research (MA with distinction gained March 1997,
Southampton) in the archaeology and anthropology
of rock art included
interpreting Namibian rock engravings in the
Twyfelfontein Valley
according to nineteenth century ethnographic
records of San Bushman
shamanism. Also, explorations of the
socio-political institutionalisation
of altered states of consciousness in Irish
Neolithic passage
tombs
