Selected Copyediting RulesThese are listed in no particular order; when they become too numerous, we'll start organizing them. The first use of an unfamiliar term should be put in italics, like this, if it is then explained in the text (as in most cases it should be). For rules on whether to italicize adjacent punctuation marks, see CMS 5.4-5. After that, when a term is mentioned or referred to -- e.g., the word "encyclopedia" has 12 letters -- the word should be put in double quotes. Of course, if the same term is then simply used -- e.g., this is a large encyclopedia -- then it is not put in quotes. When an author is quoted in both an original language and a translation, the language into which the original is translated should come first. While the first person is to be eschewed in articles, "we" is permissible where it is substitutable by an impersonal passive voice rather than by "I." For example, "We know that Herodotus was exiled" is permissible (if true), because that can be replaced by "It is known that Herodotus was exiled." On the other hand, "We believe that Mozart was the greatest of Classical composers," because this means the author believes that Mozart was the greatest of Classical composers. Works cited in notes need not be placed in "For Further Reading." The "For Further Reading" section is not a list of references. |
