The foregoing is a proposal for the breakdown of top-level categories within Nupedia.  The primary purpose of this category scheme is to organize Nupedia editorial groups, not Nupedia articles.  We might, however, follow this same scheme (or something like it) in organizing Nupedia articles.

You might observe that very many categories overlap to some degree, and a few categories overlap considerably.  For example, this is particularly the case with Classics, which of course overlaps with History, Philosophy, and Poetry.  Nonetheless, for purposes of this category scheme, there is no reason why we should not put the same articles into multiple categories, rather than denying the importance or usefulness of well-accepted categories of scholarship such as, indeed, Classics.

You might also note that we have prised out certain categories, e.g., Zoology and Botany, as subcategories of top-level categories (e.g., biology).  The reason is that, in any standard desk encyclopedia, Biology, Geography, and Arts and Literature make up the bulk of entries.  Of course, Nupedia aims to be much larger than a standard desk encyclopedia, but we want to begin by building up the contents that one would expect from a standard desk encyclopedia.

We will be establishing editorial subgroups of these groups usually after the top-level group is functional (i.e., has an editor and two peer reviewers; see the policy statement for details).
